HandMade in the Northern Forest
HandMade in the Northern Forest promotes heritage crafts and
fine art as a traditional and growing part of the region’s economy
strengthens the network among the region’s artists, craft producers.
The cornerstone of the program is HandMade in the Northern
Forest: A guide to fine art and craft traditions in Maine, New
Hampshire, Vermont and New York a full-color, 280-page guidebook featuring hundreds of the region’s
fine artists and traditional craft producers.
Heritage craft tourists bring an estimated $500 million to the
Northern Forest economy each year. Thousands of Northern Forest
artists, craftspeople, galleries, craft marketplaces, special
attractions and hospitality businesses seek new ways to increase
awareness of their businesses and of the Northern Forest as a
heritage craft tourism destination. The HandMade in the Northern
Forest program does this both by publishing the guidebook and
by encouraging networking among business and throughout the community.
More than 4,000 copies of HandMade in the Northern Forest have
been distributed to the media, arts organizations, state agencies
for tourism, economic and cultural development organizations,
elected officials, chambers of commerce, libraries, and bed and
breakfasts to broaden public awareness of the region’s craft
businesses and artists.
The Northern Forest Center co-published HandMade in the
Northern Forest with Businesses for the Northern Forest
and the support of a region-wide steering committee. HandMade
in the Northern Forest was funded in part by the National Endowment
for the Arts “Challenge America” program, the USDA Rural Enterprise
program, and the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts.
