What's in a Name?
Like a long-neglected language, the stories behind many of the
Northern Forest’s most special places are passing with time.
Passing with them is a wealth of insight into the region’s heritage
and the intimate relationships between its earliest inhabitants
and its forests and waterways.
What’s in a Name: Exploring the Stories of the Baskahegan
Landscape [2000] was conceived as a means of
using place names, and the stories behind them, to strengthen
human connections with the Northern Forest landscape. By
conducting research into the written record and drawing on
the experience of long-time local residents, elementary and
high school students uncovered and recorded the stories behind
scores of place names in the Baskahegan region of eastern
Maine.
These place names and stories provide a window into the lives
of some of the Baskahegan region’s earliest residents. Many of
the names and stories are obscure. Some are the stories of legends,
others the stories of travelers, explorers, settlers and workers.
All are the stories of people seeking to understand their place
in the lands around them. All provide opportunities for people
in the Baskahegan region and beyond to deepen their understanding
of a unique place and time.
