Public Policy
Through multiple networks, the Center develops and advocates for public policy that supports and invests in sustainable forestry and the development of forest-based economic opportunities in Northern Forest communities.
Many Northern Forest communities are physically isolated from the centers of financial and political power, and the population of the entire Northern Forest region is equivalent to only a moderate-size city. As in many rural regions, Northern Forest communities often have a hard time making their voice heard in the public policy arena. Yet the region working together can enlist the attention of four governors and eight U.S. senators, some quite senior, with influence across parties. For visibility and funding, this bloc can be of much greater value than the representatives of one state alone seeking backing for a limited goal.
The Center relies on a network of state-based partners to stay abreast of community priorities across the region, and in turn coordinates regional outreach and advocacy to give the region its strongest voice in Washington, D.C. In addition, The Center works with several other networks of rural policy advocates across the country to align our interests and achieve an even greater political voice.
