Programs & Goals
The Northern Forest Center’s work is clustered in 5 key areas.
We seek to:
Create knowledge and innovation. All
of our programs and projects begin with efforts to better
understand the Northern Forest, its assets and needs, and
opportunities and strategies for creative action. Our
action programs then flow from this in-house “incubation.”
Learning is an ongoing process—and we look for opportunities
to put new ideas into action as soon as possible.
Promote sustainable forests and forest products. The
forest remains the defining feature of the Northern Forest
and a source of multiple forms of wealth. Our programs
and projects seek to sustain the forest itself—and to
use the forest to sustain the people.
Promote heritage-based development. We
value the region’s heritage and traditions as great assets
for building its future. These natural, cultural
and recreational resources can be used to benefit residents
and visitors alike.
Bolster education and community involvement. Building
awareness of the entire Northern Forest and engaging people
in telling their own stories are essential steps to developing
better understanding of the past, present and possible
futures of the region.
Develop public
policy. Public
policies and funding reflect public values. The Center
is an advocate for the Northern Forest, seeking to increase
public investment in the region. We seek changes in public
policy that will benefit the Northern Forest.
