Grant Program
The Northern Forest Partnership Program is pleased to be able
to award grants again in 2008 The Northern Forest Partnership
Program seeks to fund innovative, community-based projects that
promote investment and create or maintain jobs in the region
by developing social, cultural, economic or environmental well-being.
To achieve maximum impact in 2008, the Northern Forest Partnership
Program will focus grant-making in 8 areas identified through
the regional Sustainable Economy Initiative, which is in turn
an outgrowth of the recommendations of the Northern Forest
Lands Council's 10th Anniversary Forum.
For 2008, the grant program seeks proposals only in the following categories:
- Implementing training for high school graduates and adult
workers in fields tied to forestry, forest-based tourism,
ecosystem science and renewable energy;
- Supporting wood-product manufacturers developing and implementing
new products, new markets, new technologies and new business
models aimed at long-term sustainability, or sustaining long-term
viability of existing operations;
- Conducting research and addressing issues common to nature-based
recreation and heritage tourism businesses to help build Northern
Forest brand identity and quality;
- Expanding the sustainable use of renewable, small-scale
energy tied to wood;
- Developing and marketing local, forest-based agricultural
products;
- Promoting and supporting forest-based arts, culture and
heritage as a source of economic activity;
- Conducting
forest-based conservation planning that leads to permanent
land conservation;
- Monitoring
and providing data on the health and productivity of the
forest ecosystem and pursuing markets for ecosystem services.
(For the purpose of grant-making, "ecosystem services" are
defined as "Processes and functions provided by natural
ecosystems that sustain life and are critical to human welfare.")
To be eligible for funding, proposals must address one or more of these focus areas and must contribute to the long-term viability of the region.
Grants are awarded on a competitive basis. For 2008, the Partnership Program will award grants in 2 categories:
- Grants up to $10,000

- Non-profit organizations
