Policy Networks
The Center relies on a network of state-based partners to stay abreast of community priorities across the region, and in turn coordinates outreach and advocacy to give the region its strongest voice in Washington, D.C. In addition, The Center works with several other networks of rural policy advocates across the country to inform regional efforts with perspectives and knowledge from other places, incorporate Northern Forest priorities into national and regional rural policy platforms, and achieve an even greater political voice for the region.
Rural Voices for Conservation Coalition
Since 2009, the Center has participated in the Rural Voices for Conservation Coalition (RVCC). RVCC is comprised of western rural and local, regional, and national organizations that have joined together to promote balanced conservation-based approaches to the ecological and economic problems facing the West. While the RVCC is Western-focused, many of the policy issues it addresses are relevant in the Northern Forest, including biomass energy, new markets for ecosystem services, and funding for community forests. Northern Forest Center staff and partners participate in RVCC working groups and have joined RVCC for joint trips to Washington, D.C.
Coalition for Eastern Forests and Communities
The Coalition for Eastern Forests and Communities formed in 2009 to improve the social, economic and environmental well-being of communities and forests in the Eastern United States. by working together to share, develop and advocate for effective national policy solutions that promote healthy forest ecosystems and vital communities. Northern Forest Center staff are active on the leadership team for the coalition as well as in coalition working groups focused on ecosystem services, biomass energy, and community capacity.
