Visual Indices
A scan of projects & drivers
When The Center began focusing on woody biomass as a thermal heating source it gathered information about renewable biomass energy activity in all four Northern Forest states. This information is organized into interactive 'maps' that document biomass projects as well as the drivers that affect project viability, at the time the indices were developed.

The indices have proved a useful tool for hundreds of people. Members of community-led renewable energy initiatives, state committees, and non-profit and business leaders have used them to display the relationships of project drivers to the outcome of existing and proposed projects, understand the complexity and interactions of various drivers, and advance collaboration efforts.
How to read a visual index: Click here for printable instructions of how to read the indices.
Start in the center: The center circle notes which state index you are viewing.
Move to the left side of the index: The top section illustrates existing renewable energy projects. The bottom section illustrates proposed projects. Both sections are further broken down into small scale, institutional scale, community scale, commercial scale, chip mills, and pellet plants.
Move to the right side of the index: This side illustrates the drivers affecting the project viability and is broken down into the following categories: public policy, financing, education, infrastructure, and community benefits.
How to use online index features:
Text: Only the basic structure of the index is viewable when you open it.
To expand information: click on non-colored lines. For example, go to left side of the index, find the box that says “Existing” headline and then the line that says “commercial scale.” Click the “commercial scale” line to expand the information and view all commercial scale projects. Any lines with a circle at the end of them are expandable. Contract the line the same way.
To see a note: Some lines contain notes. Hover over the yellow icon to view the note.
To go to web link: Some lines contain active web links. Click on a red arrow to bring you to the hyperlink.
To pan: You can move the index by clicking and dragging the index canvas.
