Ways of the Woods: People and the Land in the Northern Forest is The Center’s mobile forest heritage museum. The exhibition combines multi-media displays with educational kiosks, artifacts and children’s activities to help people explore the ever-changing relationships between people and land across the Northern Forest.
During a four year tour of fairs and festivals across the Northern Forest almost 6,000 school children and more than 130,000 people in 85 communities toured the exhibition. That’s the equivalent of 1 out of every 15 Northern Forest residents!
In 2010, the Center began partnering with colleges, museums and other organizations to use Ways of the Woods as an anchor for extended programming and educational activities. Host organizations work with the Center to “install” the exhibit for periods ranging from a few weeks to several months, and to manage public interaction with the exhibit based on their own organizational interests and capacity.
The Ways of the Woods exhibits are on view at Paul Smith's College Visitor Interpretive Center through early July.
Ways of the Woods provides a wide range of exhibit elements designed to help people of all ages and backgrounds learn about the rich forest-based heritage and culture of the Northern Forest.
Northern Forest Videos
Videos produced by The Center and community partners bring to life some of the personalities, communities and issues that make the Northern Forest unique.
Voices from Ways of the Woods
Ways of the Woods consistently draws praise from visitors and emotional responses as people reflect on their own relationship with the region’s rural communities and forest landscape.
Ways of the Woods is a multi-state program created with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
